Six pupils, three teachers, and the driver of a private school bus in Ekiti State were kidnapped by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen. The kidnapping came shortly after two monarchs were killed by gunmen along Ipao-Oke Ako Road. The kidnappers demanded N30 million as ransom to release the five pupils and other victims. The joint operation team of Ekiti State Police Command, Amotekun, OPC, Civil Defence, and Local Hunters arrested five suspected kidnappers during interrogation. The suspects were found with two motorcycles, one cutlass, one jack knife or dagger, and four phones. Tensions were brewing in the communities of the two monarchs killed by the gunmen, with a source suggesting that people might be forced to arm themselves against herdsmen in the state. Governor Biodun Oyebanji urged Ekiti residents not to despair over the kidnapping, and President Bola Tinubu ordered security agencies to rescue the abducted individuals. The Ekiti and Ondo Police commands have launched a joint rescue operation.

Bandits have attacked a Niger State community, killing at least 50 people and causing 13 military personnel to be killed and some local vigilantes injured. The bandits were terrorizing Kundu village near Zungeru, Wushishi Local Government Area, and were reportedly settling with cows and domestic animals. Senior military officers also lost their lives to the bandits. The killing of military men occurred on Sunday, with 13 casualties recorded and eight others killed by the bandits. The bandits laid ambushs for the military men, who were on a rescue mission. At least 21 military personnel corpses were deposited at the Zungeru Federal Medical Centre, while injured vigilante members were receiving temporary treatment. The Nigerian Air Force's MI-171 helicopter crashed near Chukuba Village in Niger State, with preliminary investigations underway to determine the probable cause of the crash.

21 herdsmen have been killed by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) fighters in separate attacks in Borno State, North East of Nigeria for ignoring the warning of the terrorists group. Sources said the terrorists who rode on 17 motorcycles attacked and killed 14 herdsmen in the axis of Kukawa in the evening of Tuesday 25, July 2023 after accusing them of trespassing. A Counter-Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama who confirmed the atrack said they didn’t fire any shots from their rifles as they freely deployed machetes in beheading many of the herdsmen. After killing the herdsmen and stealing their livestock, the insurgents moved towards the axis of Kukawa, Doro and Kalla, areas suspected to be occupied by large numbers of the terrorists. Consequently, on July 25, at about 2300hours, the terrorists in about 7 gun trucks intercepted another Fulani herdsmen in the axis of Kukawa and killed six additional persons after warning them not to ever come to the area. Some of the remaining victims who fled the scene were able to recover four bodies in the aftermath of the attacks leaving several bodies to litter in the bushes. Sources pointes out that the week-long onslaught against the herdsmen have forced them to flee from Lake Chad to safer locations in the axis of Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

Leading consumer goods manufacturing companies have faced severe funding pressure due to rising interest rates and foreign exchange scarcity. Financial Vanguard findings show that these companies have resorted to expensive bank borrowings to sustain their businesses, increasing their exposure to banks to N1.834 trillion in the first half of 2023. The finance cost from these borrowings rose by 411.2% to N330.972 billion in H1'23, driven by the steady increases in the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The top five borrowers are International Breweries, Unilever Nigeria, Guinness Nigeria, Nestle Nigeria, and Nigerian Breweries Nigeria. Analysts and investment experts have criticized the high cost of borrowing from banks, arguing that capital market equity remains the best financing option for manufacturers to meet operational needs. They also advised manufacturing companies to consider Commercial Papers (CPs) for short-term borrowing to reduce finance costs and avoid banks' stringent conditions.

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday evening met with the Northern Governors, whose states are sharing boundary with Niger Republic at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. 

Although the agenda of the meeting was not made public, a presidency source said it was part of consultations by the President on the situation in Niger.

The governors in attendance were Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Mai Malam Buni (Yobe), Idris Nasir (Kebbi) and Dr Dikko Radda (Katsina).

The meeting according to a presidency source was convened to get input from the northern Governors as the seven day ultimatum for the military to reinstate the overthrown President has expired. Recall that the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government had about a week ago given ultimatum to the military junca that sacked the democratically elected President, Mohamed Bazoum.

Senators have rejected President Bola Tinubu's request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Niger Republic as part of an ECOWAS force to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum. The coup leaders were given a seven-day ultimatum to restore constitutional order or face force. Nigeria imposed sanctions on the coup leaders, cutting electricity supplies and closing its borders. West African defense chiefs had drawn a plan for military action, which President Tinubu wrote to the Senate for permission to involve Nigerian troops in. Senators agreed to pass a resolution condemning the coup and commending ECOWAS leaders on their efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger, but ruled out military options. They urged President Tinubu to intensify negotiation with the coup leaders and send elderstatemen as special envoys to dialogue. They also argued that Nigeria's military is ill-equipped and not prepared to fight war, and that Niger is the highest arms market in Africa.

Moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods. The public is advised to take necessary caution and avoid driving and walking through flood waters. NiMet also urged risk and disaster managers, agencies, and individuals to be proactive in averting the loss of lives and properties during the rainy season.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has reported that 122 people have lost their lives due to a diphtheria outbreak in Nigeria. As of July 2023, 3,850 suspected cases were reported, with 1,387 confirmed cases. The disease has claimed 122 lives, with a case fatality rate of 8.7%. The outbreak has affected mainly Kano, Yobe, Katsina, Lagos, FCT, Sokoto, and Zamfara, with 98.0% of the suspected cases occurring in these states. Only 22% of confirmed cases received routine childhood immunization vaccinations, and the need to reach the unreached is critical. UNICEF Nigeria is collaborating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), affected states, and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to plan and operationalize the response. Key interventions include transporting vaccines, training health workers, and providing face masks, hand sanitizers, and antibiotics. UNICEF urges parents and guardians to ensure their children receive routine immunizations to protect them from preventable diseases like diphtheria.

The Presidency debunked a report that tuition fees in the federal universities have been increased, saying there was no such thing.Recall that many universities and unity schools ( federal government colleges) have announced an increase in the fees paid by students.Unity schools which are owned by the federal government increased fees from N45,000 to N100, 000.Besides, various universities have announced the new fees to be paid by students and the development has attracted outcry from parents and students.The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, also told the government to perish the idea of fees hike.But reacting to the plethora of complaints against the alleged hike in school fees in the ivory tower, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications & Strategy, Mr. Dele Alake, said in a statement that federal universities were tuition free.Alake explained that what happened was that some universities introduced discretionary charges for hostel accommodation, registration, laboratory and other charges which, according to him, are not tuition.The statement read: “It was widely reported earlier this week across some news media outlets that the Federal Government had increased tuition fees in federal universities in the country.“These reports are inaccurate and not correct. We are aware that some universities have in recent weeks announced increase in the amount payable by students on sundry charges.Continuing, he said, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to his promise of ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of the economic situation of their parents, have access to quality tertiary education.“Parts of the government’s plans to make sure all diligent students complete their education on time, notwithstanding their parents’ financial situation, include work-study, merit-based scholarships and grants.”

The Nigerian government has approved a one percent deduction from MDAs as workers' contributions to the Employee Compensation of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF). The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, or NASU, is one of the most powerful and formidable industrial unions in the nation. It has sounded the alarm, claiming that the federal government is plotting to undermine it and other unions in the educational and other allied institutions.
According to NASU, the government's policies are intended to weaken the unions in the industry. These policies include the non-implementation of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and memorandums of agreements (MOAs) freely signed by the government with unions in the industry; the registration of other unions to unionize workers in locations where unions are already organizing the workers there in violation of Section 3(2) of the Trade Unions Act (as amended); and the criminalization of strikes in the industry.

The Federal Government has set out to establish a solid minerals corporation to effectively harness the nation’s mineral resources.Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr. Dele Alake, who disclosed this at a briefing in Abuja yesterday, also spoke of plans to review all mining licenses in the country and the need to establish mines police.He said the corporation would be similar to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC Limited, NNPCL, adding that the government was ready to take the “bull by the horns” to “reap the trillion dollars worth of minerals under the ground” across the country.He said:  “Mining is big business. Nigeria must assert its presence in this environment by replicating its strategic positioning in the petroleum sector by setting up a corporate body that plays in this field.“Consequently, the ministry shall work towards the incorporation of the Nigerian Solid Minerals Corporation.“This is a corporate body that will have subsidiaries doing business in the seven priority areas that require immediate intervention and focus: gold, coal, limestone, bitumen, lead, iron-ore and baryte.“They prefer to continue to operate as illegal miners. For the last time, let me declare that the Ministry is giving such persons 30 days grace to join a miners’ co-operative or find another vocation to do.“On the expiration of the period, the full weight of the law will fall on anyone seen on a mining site without a determinable status.

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer GSK UK Group Plc has announced its intention to cease commercialization of prescription medicines and vaccines in Nigeria through its subsidiary, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Nigeria PLC. Two teachers, a Vice Principal, and one other staff member were killed and seriously injured at BECO Comprehensive School in Riyom, Plateau State. Herdsmen forced their way into the school premises for cow grazing, but were stopped by security. The teachers approached to plead with the herders to vacate the premises, but the herders brought out guns and shot and killed them. The school principal confirmed the attack, stating that the security men interrogated the herdsmen and that two of the teachers were killed. The school principal lamented the incident, stating that open grazing will continue to terrorize the people of the state and the Middle Belt.

Nigeria's President has inaugurated the National Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee to determine a new minimum wage in line with ILO Convention 131. The 37-member committee, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Organised Private Sector of Nigeria, Nigerian Governors’ Forum, and the Federal Government, is expected to produce a new minimum wage in two months. The committee aims to motivate Nigerian workers to work for the common good, while also reducing commodity prices and aligning the minimum wage with the expectations of Nigerian workers.

Nigeria’s annual inflation rate rose to 24.08 per cent in July, the highest in 18 years, driven by higher prices of food items, increased transport fares, reflecting the increasing struggle of households to meet daily feeding needs, worsened by the impact of fuel subsidy removal and continued depreciation of the naira.

As a result, food inflation rose to 26.98 per cent, the highest level in 18 years, since September 2005.

Also reflecting the impact of fuel subsidy removal on cost of transportation and related services, core inflation (all items less farm produce and energy), rose to 20.47 per cent in July, the highest in 19 years, up by 0.41 percentage points from 20.06 per cent in June.

Disclosing this in its Consumer Price Index report for August, the National Bureau of Statistics, said that increases in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages were responsible for most (12.47 per cent) of the rise in the headline inflation rate to 24.08 per cent in July, followed by housing water, electricity, gas & other fuel (4.03 per cent); clothing and footwear (1.84 per cent); transport (1.57 per cent); furnishings, household equipment and maintenance (1.21 per cent).

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has criticized the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the failure to publish spending details of about N400bn saved as a result of the removal of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) subsidy on petrol. The suit seeks an order of mandamus to direct Tinubu to publish the spending details, provide details of the plans for the savings, and ensure that the savings are not diverted into private pockets. SERAP argues that transparency would increase public trust and confidence that the savings would be used to benefit Nigerians. The Tinubu government has a legal obligation to protect individuals against the threat posed to human rights by the removal of the subsidy on petrol and to effectively address the aftermath of the removal. The removal will continue to undermine the rights of Nigerians and increase their vulnerability to poverty. Nigeria has improved its ranking in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), moving five places up to rank 145 out of 180 countries assessed. The latest corruption index released by Transparency International (TI) also added one point to its previous 24, ending up scoring 25 out of the 100 maximum points in the 2023 CPI results. The CPI measures how corrupt each country's public sector is perceived to be and is arguably the most widely used global corruption ranking in the world. The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) presented the index in Abuja and said Nigeria's score is below the sub-Saharan African average of 33 points. The index does not show specific incidences of corruption in the country, but it indicates the perception of corruption in Nigeria. The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has called for an urgent reform of the justice system in the country, saying it was worried that public confidence in the judiciary remained at very low levels.The legal body, in a communique it issued to mark the end of its 63rd Annual General Conference, AGC, further demanded an upward review of the remuneration of judges across the federation.It recommended that issues involving the remuneration of judicial officers should not only be separated from the public sector, but also removed from the purview of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC.Conference also recommended an independent salary scale for judicial officers. Conference recommends that urgent attention be paid to the plight of magistrates and other lower court judges, the NBA stated in the communique that was read to newsmen yesterday by its National President, Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, SAN.Conference recommended practical strategies to address security concerns. These include community involvement in policing, youth engagement through job creation, enhanced regional cooperation, media sensitization, comprehensive police reforms, religious school regulation, strengthening the judiciary, and observance of human rights.The adoption of state security forces, proper land management, international resource acquisition, and meticulous implementation of approved plans were also suggested,” the communique further read.

The National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, at exactly noon yesterday, made good its threat as members complied with the indefinite strike order issued by the National Executive Council, NEC, on Tuesday night.NARD embarked on the strike, despite the intervention of speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, who met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday night, urging him to wade into the matter, with a view to addressing the issues at stake.Although the Federal Government said it was already looking into the demands of the striking resident doctors towards effecting a speedy resolution, NARD said the government was yet to call them for a meeting, insisting that government’s response would determine how long the strike would last.As of 12:30 pm when Vanguard visited some of the affected tertiary health institutions in Lagos yesterday, the doctors had left their consulting rooms, as only consultants and student doctors were attending to a few patients that were caught unawares by the industrial action.While most of the patients who spoke to Vanguard said they had already been attended to before 12 noon, others bemoaned the fact that they were not able to beat the time of the strike and were asked to come back next time.“We know the peculiarities and the dangers in the declaration of strike. But, I am sorry that this is the only language government understands.”

The Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, in a landmark decision, yesterday, dismissed the petitions of the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, and their candidates against the election of President Bola Tinubu. The five-man panel, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, dismissed the petition of Mr Peter Obi of LP seeking to nullify Tinubu’s election. It also dismissed APM’s petition seeking to disqualify the president over the invalid nomination of his running mate, Senate Kashim Shettima. The PEPC, dismissed the allegation of the Labour Party, LP, and its candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, that the 2023 presidential election was rigged in favour of President Bola Tinubu. The court, in its preliminary ruling that was delivered by Justice Abba Mohammed, held that Obi and the LP did not by way of credible evidence, establish their allegation that the February 25 election was characterized by manifest corrupt practices.

Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revoked 167 plots of land in high-brow districts of Abuja due to the refusal or failure of their allottees to develop them. The revocations were issued in a notice issued by the administration, which stated that the plots were revoked due to continued contravention of the terms of development of the Right of Occupancy. Wike had vowed to restore the master plan of the territory and revoke plots that had not been developed or whose ground rents had not been paid for years.

Nigeria's petroleum industry regulators and operators have formally effected a subsidy withdrawal, causing retail prices to increase by about 170 per cent to N500 per litre. The new price template took effect after a deadlock in Abuja. Borno and Yobe states have the highest petrol prices, while Lagos has the least. Depots sell the product at N470 per litre, with about N300 per litre going to stakeholders in the value chain. NNPC Limited has adjusted pump prices at its retail stations to N537 per litre, reflecting market dynamics. The company is committed to ensuring a ceaseless supply of products and apologizes for any inconvenience caused. Independent marketers and major marketers dispensed at N540 per litre. IPMAN Public Relations Officer Chinedu Ukadike said the group is ready for deregulation and is ready for competition.

The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee has questioned the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) over alleged lopsided employment. The committee demanded the agency to submit a list of all staff employed between 2015-2023 and criticized the lack of adherence to public service regulations. The committee found that JAMB employed 300 staff from 2015 to 2023 without advertising, shortchanging many Nigerian citizens based on their employment records. The Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, explained that the board followed federal character principles in the job recruitment exercise conducted from 2015 to 2023. He stated that the board had obtained a waiver from relevant agencies to employ staff to replace those that had left. The alleged lopsided employement was due to the need to fill vacancies in over 40 offices across the federation. The committee has taken oral testimonies from Messers Babamasi Jalo, Abdulraziz Azara, Musa Ibrahim, and two other victims of employment racketeering by former Desk Officer Haruna Kolo. Kolo collected N1.2 million from Jalo for IPPIS capturing and asked him to look for other persons for salary payment. The House Committee insists that Kolo, the Director of IPPIS in the Office of Accountant-General of the Federation, and other accused persons must appear unfailingly before the probe panel.

The Senate will today confirm the ministerial nominees forwarded to it for screening and subsequent confirmation by President Bola Tinubu. 

Before the confirmation, the Senate would first screen the remaining two nominees sent to it by the President on Friday.

They are the former Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo, SAN, (Delta State) and Mariya Mahmoud Mairiga Bunkure, a former Commissioner for Higher Education in Kano State during the tenure of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

President Tinubu had earlier sent a list of 28 ministerial nominees, followed by a supplementary list of 19 last Wednesday to the Senate for screening and, thereafter, on Friday, added Keyamo from Delta State.

The name of Maryam Shetty from Kano was removed and replaced with Mariya Mahmoud.

Investors in the Nigerian stock market have softened their sentiment to 0.06 percent, down from 5.2 percent recorded the previous day.
